Long Walks & Wildflowers

I’m inspired by the wilds of Devon and Cornwall, with its rolling hills, coastal paths and wildflower hedgerows. My work is all about capturing the spirit of the countryside.

I make my pieces from red earthenware clay. It’s an abundant material with a long history of use among rural English potters and it connects me to the earth and the surrounding iron-rich Devon soils.

I like to hand form my work using simple tools. It’s an intimate slow way of working, that captures the marks made during the making process and gives the pieces their organic feel.

Drawn to traditional English slipware for its warm earthy colours and its potential for intricate surface decoration, I paint my pieces using traditional slips whilst also making use of the more modern pigments now available in the forms of underglazes and stains.

I like to work spontaneously and freely using my sketches and my imagination, building up layers as I go and etching through them to reveal the clay beneath. Suggestive brushstrokes and tiny engraved details create lively and tactile surfaces that encourage handling and further explorations.
